Thanks for the replies. I guess I'll have to take it to the shop. Any idea what a new screen costs? Maybe I'd be ahead getting a new laptop. This was a high end laptop back in the day, but I'm sure its a relic by now (3+ years old).

I have a Sony Vaio laptop with an XGA TFT screen. Not a clue what that means. Anyway, there is a thin line running vertically through the monitor. The line just showed up today. Does this mean my screen is on its last legs? Can it be repaired or do I need to replace it? Any advice would be appreciated. The line is really annoying.

What gets me is that her sentence was cut in half for good behavior before she even go locked up. And what was that "good behavior"? Making her court appearance, which is required by law anyway. Sheesh! I wondered about that also. I read that giving time off for good behavior before the jail time begins is common. The practice gives the inmate an incentive to be a good prisoner and follow the rules. The reduced sentence also helps to ease overcrowding.

Disfellowshipping smokers is an outrage!
by yaddayadda inhow does the society scripturally justify taking the ultra-harsh measure of disfellowshipping and shunning persons who merely enjoy smoking a few cigarettes a day?
in what way is mild smoking a gross sin that is deserving of such a harsh punishment?
how on earth does the society make the connection between the scriptural exhortation to 'cleanse ourselves of every defilement of flesh and spirit' (2 cor 7:1 & 2) to taking the extremely harsh measure of denying a smoker the right to any contact with their fellow congregation members, friends, and jw family?

Not that I condone the practice of booting people who light up, but the witnesses appear to have been way ahead of the curve. Smoking is banned in many areas by the government. My state just passed a ban. I also saw that in Britain the Health Services are going to withhold some surgeries until the patient quits (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=459574&in_page_id=1770). That seems a bit harsh. I wouldn't doubt if many witnesses believe that their position on smoking helped blaze the trail for making smokers pariahs around the world.

At about 6:30 this morning I was startled awake by someone pounding and/or kicking on my door. Thinking wtf I pulled on my jeans and a t-shirt (I'm really glad I did this) and made my way downstairs. I looked out my front window and nobody was there so I headed to the backdoor. As I passed the door to the basement, I heard someone clomping on the staircase. I grabbed my cell phone and a pair of shoes and made a quick exit.
I took a peek around the corner of my house as I dialed 911. There was glass on the sidewalk. A couple of minutes after calling 911, a squad pulled up. I went down front to the officer. "Someone's in my basement," I said. He started up my front steps, stopped, and then asked, "Are you bleeding?" I said no, why. "Stay away," he replied. "There's a blood trail." More squads showed up and the police entered my house. No one was inside, but there was bloody finger and palm prints on the basement wall. More blood was on the outside wall by the door and the front door knob was also covered with blood. A couple of more reports from 911 came from people living down the block who had doors kicked in and windows smashed. More squad cars converged on the block.
Long story short, an arrest was made. The guy was walking down the street dripping blood from the cuts he inflicted on himself breaking into my house and the other ones. He broke into 3 houses. I could only wonder what kind of a nut job would go around breaking into houses in the early daylight on a national holiday when most people are home? I asked the officers if the criminal was from my neighborhood and if he had a history. "No, he lives about a mile away. No, we don't know him, no history. We do know of the place where he lives." I thought the answer was a bit cryptic. They know about the place where he lives. A half-way house? A group home? One of the officers alluded to "mental problems." Duh.
So I spent most of the day making repairs and cleaning. The sidedoor no longer has a window, but plywood. I swept and vacuumed the broken glass inside and outside the house. I know that I didn't get it all and sooner or later I'll step on a piece and be reminded of the intruder. Finally, I washed the blood from the walls of the basement and house, off the steps and the basement floor. I followed the blood trail down the sidewalk as far as the hose reached rinsing it into the gutter. Now I'm going to go have a couple of beers. A Memorial Day I won't soon forget.

Vernon - The church is called The Vineyards. I don't know the denomination but from what I gather it is a born again type church. Their flier about the bike blessing said, "We're much more about connecting with God than being religious." The church is in Duluth, MN.
DocBob - I was in Laconia a couple of years ago. Had a blast. Fun riding out in New Hampshire. The CMA has a similar set up at Sturgis. Besides providing a quiet place with some drinks and snacks, I think the CMA also helps people (mostly women) who have been abandoned at the rally by purchasing bus tickets home for them. I've seen the CMA at many biker events both large and small. They do really good work.

I went to a bike blessing today. It started with a breakfast and then a ride to the church for the event. The church had a band playing and they were pretty good. The minister was wearing jeans, chaps, t-shirt, and a leather vest while giving the sermon. After the service the church fed everyone while a blues band played. Prayers were said for the bikes and the riders and we rode off. It wasn't a bad way to spend a Sunday. And the church service should hold me over until next year.
Bikes lined up by church for three blocks. I'm guessing about 250 total.
I wonder if the people living by the church found this to be annoying?

Good job! I really enjoy hearing about people earning degrees. Right after high school a co told me that I would not be able to finish a degree before armygeddon. Twenty one years later I graduated with a Bachelor's. Another failed prophecy. Maybe your sister told you to remember jehovah as a way to entice you to move to Brooklyn. I hear they need lots of lawyers out there.

Diamonds, Are They a Scam?
by Satanus inwatching the history channel on all the effort, expense and equipment that goes into mining them, cutting and polishing them, the above question occured to me.
so, except for industrial uses, what is it about them?
i mean, as far as looking at them, glass worth less than a nickel can look the same.

If a person wants diamonds without the conflict fuss, buy them from Canada.
